How To Make Homemade Granola

January 25, 2025

Granola is a delicious and nutritious breakfast with the power to fuel your day with energy and satisfaction. My kids love homemade granola and it makes a great addition to many of their favorite breakfast options. By making your own granola you can take control of the ingredients, flavors, and textures to create the perfect combination tailored to your unique taste buds.

Granola is a great way to make use of cheap oats you find on sale to make something your family can get excited about. Oats are a great meal filler that can help you save money. This is a great addition to things like homemade yogurt, and fruit smoothie bowls, and it is even used as a topping for baked treats or eaten like a cereal.

What is Granola and Why Make It at Home?

Granola is a popular breakfast food and snack made from rolled oats, nuts, seeds, and sweeteners, typically baked until crispy. By making homemade granola, you control the ingredients and can create a healthier, more affordable, and customizable version of store-bought granola.

Making your own granola has several advantages over purchasing store-bought varieties. Here are some reasons why you should consider making homemade granola:

Healthier option: Homemade granola allows you to control the ingredients, ensuring that you can create a healthier version compared to many store-bought granolas, which can be high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives.

Customizable: When making granola at home, you can easily tailor the recipe to your preferences and dietary needs. You can experiment with different combinations of nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and spices to create your ideal granola blend. I dehydrate a lot of fruit at home so this gives us a fun way to use it up. We received a large bag of dried cherries recently that make a great granola that eventually got turned into a batch of tasty granola bars for snacks.

Cost-effective: Making granola at home can be more cost-effective than purchasing it from the store, especially if you use bulk ingredients. You can also control the quality of the ingredients to get a premium product at a lower cost.

Freshness: Homemade granola is fresher than store-bought granola, which may have been sitting on the shelf for an extended period. Fresh granola has a better taste and texture, providing a more enjoyable eating experience.

Environmentally friendly: By making granola at home, you can reduce packaging waste from store-bought products. You can also choose to purchase ingredients in bulk or from local sources, which can have a smaller environmental footprint.

Unique gift idea: Homemade granola makes a thoughtful and personalized gift for friends and family, especially when packaged in attractive containers or jars.

Fun activity: Making granola can be a fun and engaging activity for people of all ages. It’s an excellent opportunity to involve kids in the kitchen and teach them about healthy eating habits.

Making your own granola allows you to enjoy a healthier, customizable, and cost-effective breakfast or snack option, while also contributing to a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Homemade Granola

  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup of your choice of fruits, nuts, and seeds
  • 1/2 cup sweetener of choice
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Choice spices and flavorings

Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of rolled oats, 1 cup of your favorite nuts and seeds, and any optional ingredients, like spices or salt.

In a separate bowl or measuring cup, mix together 1/2 cup of sweetener, 1/3 cup of oil, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients, and stir well to ensure even distribution.

Spread the granola mixture evenly onto the prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to prevent burning and ensure even browning.

Remove the granola from the oven and let it cool completely. It will become crispier as it cools.
