How To Keep Your Garden Alive While You Are On Vacation

June 4, 2025

With summer fast approaching one major concern for gardeners is how to maintain their gardens while they’re away on vacation, especially during the crucial summer season when plants require the most attention.

Without proper care, gardens can suffer from issues like sun damage, dehydration, and pest infestations. However, with some careful planning, you can ensure your garden stays healthy even while you’re away.

Preparing your garden for short periods.

For short weekend getaways, your garden may not require much intervention. Typically, gardens can manage fine on their own for a few days. Before leaving, give your garden a boost by adding fresh compost, providing a deep watering, and applying a layer of mulch to help retain moisture.

For longer vacations

If your vacation extends beyond a weekend, it’s essential to arrange for someone to check on your garden periodically this is a great job for a local teenager that may be looking to make a little extra money. Despite your best efforts, gardens are still vulnerable to pests and other issues. Having a friend or neighbor stop by to inspect and possibly treat any problems can prevent major damage.

Investing in an automatic Wi-Fi enabled watering system can be invaluable. These systems allow you to remotely control watering schedules from your smartphone or tablet, ensuring your plants receive the right amount of water even when you’re away. Additionally, consider using watering globes or DIY versions made from wine bottles to keep potted plants hydrated.

Before departing, tend to your garden by removing weeds, applying fresh mulch to suppress weed growth, and pruning plants to remove any dead or decaying material. Inspect plants for signs of pests and treat them as needed to prevent infestations from worsening while you’re gone. For persistent pests like aphids, releasing ladybugs beforehand can help keep populations in check.

Give your garden a nutrient boost before leaving by adding compost or applying a liquid fertilizer. A well-fed garden is better equipped to withstand stressors and fend off pests.

Upon your return, spend some time harvesting any ripe crops, pulling weeds, and conducting a thorough inspection for pests. If you didn’t feed your plants before leaving, do so as soon as you return to replenish their nutrients.

With proper preparation and care, your garden can thrive even in your absence. And if any issues arise, your proactive measures will help mitigate damage, allowing your garden to recover quickly upon your return.
